Bayliss, John Clifford
(1919-1978)
   Bayliss, born in Gloucestershire, graduated from St. Catherine's College, Cambridge, where he is listed as one of their famous alumni. He was a civil servant, then served in the Royal Air Force in India. He edited The Fortune Antholog y (1942) with Nicholas Moore and Douglas Newton, New Road (1943 and 1944) with Alex Comfort, and A Romantic Miscellany (1946) with Derek Stanford. His collection The White Knight and Other Poems was published in 1944. He contributed in the war years to Poetry London and Poetry Quarterly and later to Poetry Review. He was also published in Air Force Poetry (1944), in Poetry of the Forties (Penguin Books) (1968), and Surrealist Poetry in English (Penguin Books) (1992). He is sometimes associated with the New Apocalyptics, perhaps because of his poem "Apocalypse and Resurrection;" he is also called a surrealist or New Romantic. Some of his other poems: "October," "Reported Missing," "Seven Dreams."
